Caroline told me about one particularly blustery and cold winter night when she met this man. As she was driving home, Caroline noticed her homeless acquaintance struggling with his train of shopping carts as he crossed the snow-laden street, impeding the progress of a line of cars. As part of the growing car lineup, Caroline got out of her vehicle to assist the bedraggled man. After helping him to get his "home on wheels" clear of the traffic, she reached into her purse to give him some money as a gift. He stopped her, a plaintive look in his weary eyes, pleading, "I know you can always spare me your money ... but ... can you spare me a hug?" To this man, a hug was worth far more than money, and with the cars behind her honking impatiently, Caroline stood on the sidewalk and gave this man a big hug that brought warmth to both of their hearts. I was so touched when I heard this story from Caroline and what impressed me the most was the lesson that love transcends all. That simple hug will likely never be forgotten by this homeless man, by Caroline ... and certainly by me. |

My friend Caroline has a huge heart and often gives money to beggers and homeless people on the streets. There was one particular man that she'd see frequently, and she always made sure to go out of her way and give him some coins. Passersbys generally avoided him due to his scruffy appearance, however Caroline never found him the slightest bit menacing.
